A rare and visually striking Ottoman military atlas, Muharebât-ı Meşhûre-i Osmaniye (“The Famous Battles of the Ottomans”) was compiled by the celebrated Ottoman field marshal, statesman, and military historian Ahmed Muhtar Paşa, founder of the Ottoman Military Museum and one of the empire’s foremost military intellectuals of the late imperial period.
Published in 1332 AH / 1914 CE, on the eve of the First World War and during the final years of the Ottoman Empire, this monumental work presents a comprehensive visual record of some of the most significant battles and campaigns in Ottoman history. The volume contains 38 detailed battle plans and military maps, accompanied by explanatory texts analysing troop movements, formations, strategic positions, and battlefield developments.
Executed in an impressive large-format folio, the atlas reflects the sophisticated military cartography and historical scholarship of the late Ottoman period. The maps are rendered with exceptional clarity and technical precision, transforming the work into both a historical document and an important example of Ottoman military print culture.
Rarely encountered complete, Muharebât-ı Meşhûre-i Osmaniye occupies an important place within the study of Ottoman military history, cartography, and imperial historiography. Works of this nature were produced in limited numbers and were often intended for military academies, officers, and state institutions, contributing to their rarity today.
A highly collectible and institutionally significant work, appealing to collectors of Ottoman militaria, Islamic cartography, and late imperial Ottoman history.
